Movie Review: Flight the Movie

Due to technical difficulties Whip and his co-pilot, Brian Geraghty, (Ken Evans), is forced to abruptly land flight 227 with 102 passengers on board, Whip and Ken manages to save 96 out of 102 passengers after this disastrous landing. While in the hospital recovering from his injuries, Whip meets a much younger woman, Kelly Reilly (Nicole Maggen), who is recovering from a recent heroin drug overdose.
Whip and Nicole meet on the stairwell of the hospital by chance while smoking a cigarette and run into James Badge Dale (Gaunt Young Man a cancer patient) who tells them, it's a "random act of God" they have met. Neither Whip nor Nicole believes the cancer patient and sees his statement as a joke. Whip promises Nicole to come and visit her after leaving the hospital.
Eventually Whip and Nicole begin a very short lived relationship, ordinarily movies would not make a relationship believable at this point, but I must give it director Zemeckis, with regards to how this relationship was handled. Although Nicole and Whip are in what would appear to be a relationship, Whip is in the middle of an investigation for possible alcohol & cocaine usage while operating an airplane. During the investigation Whips drinking escalates and puts Nicole being an addict at even more risk of relapsing.
Nicole begins going to AA meetings alone after seeing Whip drinking excessively, Nicole tells "Whip how worried she is about him." She then invites him to an AA meeting," I love it, good job director Zemeckis. Whip leaves out of the meeting living in denial of his addiction. Whip goes on through the movie living in denial of his addiction and alcoholism until it takes a life altering experience to make him make a change actually prison saves his life. Nicole eventually puts her sobriety over her relationship with Whip and leaves him; she calls her sponsor which follows the program of AA/NA so I must say I am an advocate for this entire part, good job.
However, I didn't care for the part of John Goodman (Harling Mays) the drug dealer who was glamorized and never went to prison for his part in Whip's life. I thought there should have been more emphasis on his role and his taking more responsibility for his actions. Don Cheadle (Hugh Lang) Whip's Attorney did an excellent job, Bruce Greenwood (Charlie Anderson) Whip's best friend a heart-felt performance.
